Although The Irish Potato Famine of 1845 was unintentional, the policies of both government officials such as John Russell, and Charles Trevelyan compounded the tragedy which led to mass emigration, death, starvation, and labour camps in the form of workhouses.
The Irish Potato Famine began in 1845 and ended in 1852. The Famine was caused by a rot in a crop that the paupers of Ireland relied too heavily upon. This crop was the potato. Individuals such as John Russel and Charles Trevelyan saw the famine as an opportunity to depopulate Ireland and thus failed to relive Ireland in its moment of need.
